Professor Weihong Tan named Associate Editor for the Analytical Chemistry journal
“Dr. Weihong Tan, Distinguished Professor and V. T. and Louis Jackson Professor of Chemistry, has been named an Associate Editor forAnalytical Chemistry, the leading journal in the field of analytical chemistry. Prof. Tan is a member of the Shands Cancer Center and the McKnight Brain Institute, and he serves as Associate Director for The Center for Research at Bio/nano Interface. He is a world-leading expert in bioanalytical chemistry, making important contributions to many fields of science, including chemical biology, bioanalysis, molecular engineering, and bionanotechnology. His selection as Associate Editor recognizes these contributions, and it will allow him to lend his expertise to the journal in order to better serve the scientific community.”
Adrian Roitberg elected as Fellow of the American Physical Society
“Adrian Roitberg, a professor in chemistry and affiliate in the physics department, has been elected as a fellow of the American Physical Society. This is an honor reserved to the top 0.5{3c0caad52c08e46b57c1dc946e6f87c810c2d6c46589b97ffcbbf8f3a9791f0d} of the society’s membership.”
Commendable ACS Student Chapter Award
“Congratulations to the UF Chemistry Club, formally known as the UF SAACS (Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society) Chapter, for being recognized with a Commendable Student Chapter Award on the basis of their 2012-2013 activities. Leadership for the year was offered by the following elected officers: Erika Klump (President), Claire Ziewitz (Vice President), Ben Duong (Secretary), Akshay Deshpande (co-Treasurer), Ishaan Hublikar (co-Treasurer), Mary Garner (Historian), Nikita Bodoukhin (Technology Director), Justin Bricker (Volunteer Coordinator), and Brian Kagay (Volunteer Coordinator). Prof. Ronald Castellano and Prof. Leslie Murray are the Club’s faculty advisors.”
2013 Keaffaber Scholar Award
“Congratulations to Anthony Quartararo who has been named the recipient of the inaugural Keaffaber Scholar Award. The award has been made possible through the generosity of Dr. Jeffrey Keaffaber, a longtime friend and supporter of the Department of Chemistry. Dr. Keaffaber received his Ph.D. from the Department in 1989 (with Prof. William Dolbier) and pursued a career in industry, entrepreneurship, and consulting; he wore many hats when he returned to the Department in 2003 including as a senior lecturer, undergraduate advisor, and pioneer of new teaching initiatives. Dr. Keaffaber maintains a close relationship with our students and faculty in his new role as co-owner of The Brew Spot Caf in Gainesville.”
Rod Bartlett delivers Lise-Meitner-Minerva Lectureship in Israel
“Prof. Rod Bartlett was selected as the Lise Meitner Lecturer for 2013 for his pioneering coupled-cluster and many-body perturbation theories for electron correlation in atoms, molescules, and solids. Awarded since 1998, the lectureship is a distinction given by the Lise Meitner-Minvera Center to a prominent quantum chemist whose work has had an important impact on the chemical community.”
Townes R. Leigh Prizes Awarded
“The Department of Chemistry is pleased to announce the recipients of the first annual Townes R. Leigh Prizes for outstanding achievement by first year graduate students. This new award recognizes excellence in coursework, teaching, research and written qualifying examinations.”

Aponick Group Research Highlighted in Nature Chemistry
“In the Aponick group, Flavio Cardoso has been studying the preparation of a new class of biaryl ligands for asymmetric catalysis. Biaryls containing 5-membered heterocycles were hypothesized to be excellent P,N-ligands, but their preparation as a single enantiomer required new design strategies. Cardoso and Aponick, with Khalil Abboud, recently published their new approach involving ground state stabilization of the chiral conformer as aJACSCommunication. This work was recently highlighted inNature Chemistrywhere it is noted that ?-stacking greatly increases the configurational stability of these biaryls, which function as highly enantioselective ligands in the asymmetric A3-coupling reaction. Full details can be found at:”
