Winners of the 2014 Bates and Laitinen Gradudate Fellowships

The Analytical Division of the Chemistry Department is pleased to announce the winners of the Roger G. Bates and Herbert A. Laitinen Graduate Fellowships.

UF Chemistry Ranked 32nd in the World

“The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) has ranked the 100 best chemistry programs in the world and UF Chemistry is ranked #32 in 2013. Previous rankings include #34 in 2011, #34 in 2010, and #36 in 2009.”

Michael Schulz wins the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition

“Graduate student Michael Schulz recently took first place and the chance to continue on in the regional competition in the Three-Minute Thesis Competition (3MT) sponsored by the University of Florida Graduate School, in collaboration with I-Cubed and GSAC. Forty-one graduate students from the University of Florida participated in the competition to compress their graduate research into a three-minute presentation using only PowerPoint slides. No other electronic media or props were allowed. This was the first time the 3MT competition, which started in Queensland, Australia, has been held on UF campus.”

Michael Schulz receives 2014-15 Fulbright US Student Award

“Michael Schulz has been selected for a 2014-2015 Fulbright U.S. Student Award to Germany. The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program of the United States. He will represent the country as a cultural ambassador while he is overseas, helping to enhance mutual understanding between Americans and the people in Germany. Michael will join over 100,000 Fulbright U.S. Student Program alumni who have undertaken grants since the program began in 1948.”

Mary Garner Receives an NSF Fellowship Award

“Mary Garner, an undergraduate researcher in Dr. Adam Veige’s lab in the Department of Chemistry at UF, has been honored with a National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship. The total value of each award exceeds $100,000 over a three-year period. Widely regarded as one of the most prestigious honors a graduate student can receive. This year, just 2,000 award recipients were chosen from more than 13,000 applicants nationwide.”

Cuichen Wu selected to receive a 2014 ACS Graduate Fellowship

“Cuichen (Sam) Wu, a Ph.D. candidate in Professor Weihong Tan’s research group of the Chemistry Department, has been selected to receive a 2014 ACS Division of Analytical Chemistry (DAC) Graduate Fellowship. This award is given only to 7 or 8 graduate students in the US and Canada annually.”

Michelle Reid Receives an NSF Fellowship Award

“Michelle Reid, first-year graduate student seeking a Ph.D. within the Department of Chemistry at UF, has been honored with National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship. The total value of each award exceeds $100,000 over a three-year period. Widely regarded as one of the most prestigious honors a graduate student can receive, this year, the NSF chose just 2,000 award recipients from more over 13,000 applicants nationwide.”

Professor Butcher Named Cottrell Scholar

“Rebecca A. Butcher, Assistant Professor of Chemistry at UF, recently has been named a Cottrell Scholar. The Cottrell Scholar Awards recognize early career faculty members who are committed to excel at both research and teaching. These awards are named in honor of Frederick Gardner Cottrell, scientist, inventor and philanthropist. Cottrell founded what is now the Research Corporation for Science Advancement in 1912 to provide support for scientific research and experimentation at scholarly institutions.”

Professor Butcher Awarded 2014 Sloan Research Fellowship

“Congratulations to Professor Rebecca A. Butcher on being named a 2014 Sloan Research Fellow by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. The foundation seeks to stimulate fundamental research by early-career scientists and scholars of outstanding promise. Professor Butcher is one of only twenty-three chemists to receive this award in 2014. Sloan Fellows receive $50,000 for a two-year period to support their research goals.”
