Chemistry Day at the Mall: Molecular MANIA!!

“On Saturday October 23rd, the Center for Catalysis hosted the 5th annual Halloween Molecular Mania at the Oaks Mall. A group of graduate and undergraduate students led by Prof. Adam Veige conducted experiments for mall patrons from 10am to 2pm in the Dillards court area. The experiments were designed to teach students about fundamental aspects of chemistry such as vapor pressure, polymerization, crystallization, and the different states of matter. Over 600 children, teachers, and parents participated in the event. Students Michelle Jurcak and Andrew Powers organized the event, which was supported by the National Science Foundation, the ACS-Florida Section, the Chemistry Department, and the UF Center for Catalysis.”

Cover of Green Chemistry Highlights Polymer Publication

“A publication about PET mimics by Professor Stephen A. Miller has been published in the journal Green Chemistry. The thermal properties (glass transition temperature, melting temperature, and degradation temperature) of the common thermoplastic polyethylene terephthalate (PET, found in water bottles) have been matched with a polymer that can derive from biorenewable materials lignin and acetic acid. The paper has also been noted in Highlights in Chemical Science (Wood mimics packaging polymer).”

The 2010 Jones and Battiste Awards

“This year the 2010 W. M. Jones Award for Originality and Creativity was awarded jointly to Matt Baker and John Ketcham. The award is made based on the presentation and defense of an original research proposal and judged based on three criteria: originality and impact of the idea, quality and clarity of the document, and quality and format of the presentation. The 2010 M. A. Battiste Award for Creative Work in Synthetic Organic Chemistry, sponsored by Petra Research, was awarded to John Ketcham. The award recognizes excellence in synthetic organic chemistry by a 3rd year graduate student who has completed their oral qualifying examination. Congratulations to John and Matt!”

Professor Sabin Celebrates his 70th Birthday

“Sandbjerg Estate, Denmark, July 9 – 11, 2010. Jack Sabin, Professor of Physics and Chemistry at UF and Adjungeret Professor at the University of Southern Denmark, was honored for his service and scholarship in celebration of his 70th birthday by friends and collaborators for three days of science, remembrance, and fellowship. The event was hosted by Jens Oddershede, President of Southern Denmark University and long term collaborator of Jack, at a remarkable bayside estate in southern Denmark. It was sponsored by QTP, the Department of Physics, UF, and by the University of Southern Denmark. Among the 20 invited speakers were three from UF, Yngve Ohrn, Frank Harris, and Jim Dufty. During his joint appointments at UF (40 years) and at Southern Denmark University (20 years), Jack has remarkable accomplishments in research at the interfaces of theoretical physics and chemistry, and as an administrator in many capacities (Chair, Dean, Director). During the banquet he was presented with a plaque from the International Journal of Quantum Chemistry for his exceptional service as editor of several books. But that which his colleagues mentioned most in their remarks is his outstanding quality as a self-less, honorable, and humorous friend and collaborator.”

Bartlett, McElwee-White, and Merz named ACS Fellows

“Professors Rodney J. Bartlett, Lisa McElwee-White, and Kenneth J. Merz, Jr. have been named to the 2010 class of Fellows of the American Chemical Society (ACS). 192 Members were selected this year and 163 were selected in 2009, the inaugural year of this program. The ACS Fellows Program recognizes members of the ACS for their outstanding achievements and contributions to the science, the profession, and service to the Society. Bartlett, White, Merz, and other newly elected members of this distinguished group will be honored at a special ceremony during the National ACS Meeting in Boston on August 23, 2010.”
