Professor Lisa McElwee-White is the winner of the 2015 American Chemical Society Florida Award. The award was established in 1952 by a vote of the Florida Section of the American Chemical Society and is presented annually to a chemist in the Southeast Region by the ACS Florida Section. The Florida Award recognizes leadership and contributions that advance chemistry in both scientific research and education. A specially organized award symposium will be part of the Florida Annual Meeting and Exposition in May 2015.
U.F. Welcomes Dr. Daniel Savin to the Chemistry Department Faculty and Polymer Research
“The Department of Chemistry, the George and Josephine Butler Polymer Research Laboratory, the Polymer Research Program, and the Center for Macromolecular Science and Engineering are pleased to announce the addition of Dr. Daniel Savin, who has joined our research and teaching efforts at the Universtiy of Florida. Dr. Savin comes to us as part of the Smart Polymer Nanomedicine preeminence initiative with a wide range of expertise in the areas of polymer and materials chemistry.”
Khanh Ha received Graduate Student Mentoring Award
“The U.F. Graduate Student Mentoring Award was established in 2012 to recognize graduate students at the University of Florida who take time to help others succeed as graduate or undergraduate students or in K-12 classrooms (i.e., working with K-12 students and/or teachers). The award is particularly designed to acknowledge the mentoring contribution from the graduate students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) disciplines, including SBE (Social, Behavioral and Economic) sciences.”
2014-2015 Townes R. Leigh Prize Recipients Announced
“The Department of Chemistry is pleased to announce the recipients of the annual Townes R. Leigh Prizes for outstanding achievement by first year graduate students. This award recognizes excellence in coursework, teaching, research, and written qualifying examinations. The recipients from the 2013 Ph.D. class are Tomohiro Kubo, Christopher Kabb, Matthew Bell, Laura Baily, Olivier Nsengiyumva, Shuai He, Ricardo Ferreira, Jeremy Koelmel, and Michael Wei.”
Molecular MANIA 2014!
“UF’s Department of Chemistry, along with the Center for Catalysis, will be hosting Molecular Mania 2014 at the Oaks mall this Saturday, October 25th, from 10am-3pm in the Belk court area. At this annual event, 40+ graduate student volunteers use 20+ interactive demonstrations to help convey science themes to the youth of the community, in a slightly Halloween-esque manner.”
Alex Grenning joins the Chemistry Department as an Assistant Professor
“The Department of Chemistry at the University of Florida is pleased to welcome Dr. Alex Grenning as a tenure track Assistant Professor of Chemistry. Dr. Grenning received his undergraduate degree from Lake Forest College in 2007 and then pursued Ph.D. studies at The University of Kansas under the direction of Prof. Jon Tunge. As a graduate student he discovered “deacylative allylation” and developed the first general one-pot approach to asymmetric 1,6-dienes via Pd-catalyzed bisallylation. Dr. Grenning was awarded the 2012 Higuchi Doctoral Award for the top chemistry department dissertation. After receiving his doctoral degree he headed to Boston University where he worked with Profs. John Porco, Jr. and John Snyder. There he was central in the development of an oxygen-directed oxidative Mannich reaction. His graduate and postdoctoral work has resulted in nine publications to date.”
