“Congratulations to the UF Chemistry Club, formally known as the UF SAACS (Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society) Chapter, for being recognized with its first ever Outstanding (“Gold”) Student Chapter Award on the basis of their 2015-2016 activities. The Chapter shares the honor with just 45 others from around the country. UF SAACS also received its first ever Green Chapter Award! Leadership for the year was offered by the following elected officers: Nick Lee (President), Niva Tran (Vice President), Lauren McCarthy (Secretary), Christine Haworth (Treasurer), McKenzie Coughlin (Historian), Rodrigo Forster Torres (Technology Director), Mario Rincon (Outreach Coordinator), and Khondaker Sadman (Outreach Coordinator). Professor George Christou elected a Fellow of the American Chemical Society
“UF Distinguished Professor and Drago Chair of Chemistry�George Christou�has been elected a Fellow of the American Chemical Society. His name was included in the 2016 list of new ACS Fellows published in July in C&E News, and he recently attended the ceremony for new Fellows on August 22 at the ACS national meeting in Philadelphia. ACS Fellows are chosen “for outstanding achievements in and contributions to science, the profession, and the ACS community.” He is one of only two new ACS Fellows in the state of Florida.”
Michael Harris will join the Chemistry faculty as Professor of Biochemistry and Chemical Biology
“Dr. Michael Harris, currently Professor of Biochemistry, Case Western Reserve College of Medicine and Professor of Chemistry, Case Western Reserve University, will be joining the faculty of the Department of Chemistry in January, 2016, as Professor of Chemistry in the general area of biochemistry and chemical biology. Professor Harris is recognized as a world leader in the areas of RNA biochemistry, high-throughput biochemistry assay development, including a focus on RNA targets in cancer. He approaches these problems in a highly interdisciplinary manner, combining a wide range of computational and experimental methods. We welcome Professor Harris as an esteemed new member of our faculty.”

“We are proud to congratulate�Chris Kabb�for winning the�2016 W.M. Jones Award for Originality and Creativity, for graduate students in the UF Department of Chemistry. Chris’ award proposal centered around the use of polymer-bound frustrated Lewis pairs for use as hydrogenation catalysts.”
