SciFinder Scholar 2007

Product Overview:

SciFinder Scholar is an award-winning desktop research tool designed especially for use by students and faculty to easily access the information in the CAS databases. With no special training needed, you can explore the world's most comprehensive collection of published scientific research through a variety of ways--by author name, research topic, substance identifier, chemical structure, or chemical reaction. You simply point and click to retrieve more than 28 million substances, and links to the full-text of electronic scientific journals on the web and in-house library holdings.

For more information see the UF Smathers Library SciFinder page or the SciFinder Scholar website.

Software Download:

SciFinder Scholar is a client/server application so you will have to download the client in order to use it at your workstation. SciFinder Scholar 2007 can be run from Microsoft Windows 2000 (SP3 or higher), XP (SP1 or SP2), or Vista. There are two files that need to be downloaded; the installation setup file and the custom site file.

For the PC download the following two files:

For the Mac version, stop by the IT Shop to checkout the SciFinder Mac installation CD.

Software Installation:

  1. If you are upgrading from a previous version of SciFinder Scholar, you should uninstall the older version using the Add/Remove Programs function in Windows' Control Panel before installing this version. You may still need to manually erase the folder C:\SFSCHLR after deinstalling the old version.
  2. To install the software, run sfs2007.exe (for the PC) and follow the prompts to install the software on your local harddrive. During the installation, the setup program will ask you "Do you have a disk labeled Custom Site Files?" to which you should answer "No".
  3. When the installation is complete copy the site.prf file to the folder where the SciFinder Scholar was installed. On the PC, the default installation directory is C:\SFSCHLR so if you didn't specify a different installation directory then you would copy the site.prf file to that location.
Note: If you are off-campus and not using the GatorLink dialup (as would be the case if you have DSL, a cable modem, AOL, or Earthlink, etc.) you will need to download UF's Virtual Private Network (VPN) software and have that running before attempting to use SciFinder Scholar. For more information on the VPN software, see: http://net-services.ufl.edu/provided_services/vpn/

If you have any questions or problems with the installation please contact the IT Shop by sending email to support@chem.ufl.edu .

Restrictions:

There are 11 simultaneous users among five of the SUS schools. The Library will get statistics on how many busy signals are generated and when they occur. They will then use that information to determine when, or if, there is a need to increase the number of simultaneous users.
