 UF/Chemistry, Departmental Web Policies...

The following memos represent the department's position and policy regarding the hosting of personal web space on the Department servers. There are two policies defined here by the Department Chairman; one for Chemistry graduate students and the other for the faculty and staff.

Departmental Web Policy for Graduate Students...
MEMORANDUM
November 22, 2002

From: D. E. Richardson, Chair of Chemistry To: Chemistry Graduate Students Subject: Web space usage on the Chemistry server

The Department provides both departmental and individual Web space to support the instructional, research, and administrative activities of the department. There are policies in place, both University and Departmental, that govern the usage and content of these resources. All users should take the time to familiarize themselves with these policies.

Specifically, the University's Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) allows for students to create and maintain personal Web pages that represent you as a private individual on University servers. The Department of Chemistry servers (i.e, www.chem.ufl.edu) are not generally appropriate for personal material. Any use of the departmental servers by students must conform to the guidelines applied for faculty and staff, that is, employee pages should represent the individual in his or her primary role as a UF employee. In addition to Acceptable Use considerations, the Chemistry servers have limited space for content not directly related to the department missions, and it is expected that moving personal content to University servers will extend the lifetime and capacity of our current Web server.

Space for student personal Web pages is provided as a service of Gatorlink and is known as "The Plaza". For more information about this service and for instructions for creating your own Web space on the Plaza please see http://plaza.ufl.edu.

If you currently have personal information on departmental Web pages, I ask that it be moved to the Plaza by the end of 2002. Small amounts of incidental personal information can remain on the chemistry server (such information would typically be confined to a single Web page). It is acceptable for student chemistry-oriented Web pages on the Department of Chemistry site to provide links to personal content on other campus servers and off-campus servers. Keep in mind that student personal Web pages are subject to the policies of the University's AUP and the UF Student Guide.

Thank you very much for your cooperation. If you have any questions, please contact Derrius Marlin or support@chem.ufl.edu.

Departmental Web Policy for Faculty and Staff...
MEMORANDUM
November 22, 2002

From: D. E. Richardson, Chair of Chemistry To: Chemistry Faculty, Staff and Postdoctoral Associates Subject: Web space usage on the Chemistry server

The Department provides both departmental and individual Web space to support the instructional, research, and administrative activities of the department. There are policies in place, both University and Departmental, that govern the usage and content of these resources. It is recommend that all users take the time to familiarize themselves with these policies.

Specifically, the University's Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) states that employee pages should represent the individual in his or her primary role as a UF employee. Incidental personal information on employee web pages is deemed acceptable as long as it does not interfere with the function or desired presentation of the department (such information would typically be confined to a single Web page). I believe that most or all of our faculty and staff pages already conform to this policy.

Faculty, staff, and postdocs who wish to publish extensive personal information not related to their University employment should use an Internet service provider rather than using Departmental Web resources. Space for personal Web pages is provided as a service of Gatorlink and is known as "The Plaza". For more information about this service and for instructions for creating your own Web space on the Plaza, see http://plaza.ufl.edu. It is acceptable for Web pages on the Department of Chemistry site to provide links to personal content on other campus servers and off-campus servers (links to pages where you have a personal monetary interest are likely to violate policies regarding advertising and commercial use and should be avoided).

Graduate students have been given similar information in separate memo.

Thank you for your cooperation. If you have any questions, please contact Derrius Marlin or support@chem.ufl.edu.
