Biochemistry in a Chemistry Department
Biology and
chemistry are steadily merging, and it is at the interface that the most
exciting research occurs. With the rapid advances in genome technology
and other areas of molecular biology, it is clear that biochemical research
over the next 20 years will focus increasingly on applying genomic knowledge
and the details of how large biomolecules interact. To participate,
students will need a solid background in all branches of chemistry as well
as a strong knowledge of biochemistry and molecular biology. Our
proximity and interactions with colleagues working in analytical, inorganic,
organic, physical and theoretical chemistry allows for a cohesive and comprehensive
approach to biochemistry that makes for a whole that is greater than the
sum of its parts.

Research groups in the Biochemistry Division
There are four
faculty whose appointments are in the Biochemistry Division (Profs. Benner,
Horenstein, Richards and Stewart). These links lead to the home pages
of these research groups.

Other chemistry research groups with strong biochemical interests
Divisions exist
only to organize faculty according to teaching interests and expertise;
they are not artificial barriers to cross-disciplinary research.
Several other faculty in the Chemistry Department have strong interests
in biochemistry and maintain close ties and some of these are shown below
with links to the home pages of these research groups:

Research groups with biochemical interests in other departments on campus
In addition
to these groups in the Chemistry Department, there are a number of collaborations
between faculty in the Biochemistry Division and groups in other departments
on campus including Biochemistry
and Molecular Biology, Medicinal
Chemistry, Pharmacology,
Oral
Biology and many others. These relationships combine expertise
from a variety of disciplines and enrich the experiences of both students
and faculty.
